Three Elevated Thai Venues Pairing Breathtaking Sunsets with Culinary Artistry

There is a distinct magic to the golden hour in Thailand. As the tropical sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in bruises of amber, violet, and soft magenta, the energy of the country shifts. It is a moment that calls for pause, connection, and a sensory experience to match the view.

This season, a trio of remarkable sky bars across Thailand is redefining the rooftop experience. Moving far beyond standard cocktail menus, these venues are pairing panoramic sunset views with uniquely distinct culinary concepts—bringing artisan local cheeses, authentic Spanish social hours, and heritage-steeped Chinese dining to the clouds.

Local Craftsmanship Above the Northern Hills: MAI The Sky Bar, Chiang Mai

MAI The Sky Bar, Chiang Mai

Perched on the 22nd floor of Meliá Chiang Mai, MAI The Sky Bar offers an unparalleled 360-degree vista. To the east, the serene Ping River snakes through the valley; to the west, the sacred Doi Suthep Temple sits majestically on the mountaintop. Recently honored as a 2026 Tatler Best Spotlight Bar by Tatler Asia, this rooftop features a thrilling glass bridge connecting its highest seating areas.

  • The Pairing

Starting daily from 6:00 PM, the bar grounds its high-altitude experience in local, grassroots craftsmanship with its ‘Artisan Thai Cheese & Wine Pairing’. Guests can enjoy a carefully selected glass of Thai wine from the acclaimed Monsoon Valley in Hua Hin, paired with a rotating board of small-batch artisanal cheeses from Chiang Mai’s own Jartisann. Made from locally sourced raw milk, the selections evolve seamlessly with seasonal availability.

  • The Mixology

The cocktails tell stories of the sky and spirituality. The signature ‘MAI The Sky’ cocktail references the venue’s golden hour by blending lychee and vanilla beneath a cloud-like cava air foam, playfully topped with a miniature aeroplane designed to mirror the aircraft visible overhead. Meanwhile, the ‘Temple’ cocktail honors northern heritage, combining Siam Lanna Gin with a Niem-Sompoi cordial made from Sompoi (a botanical traditionally associated with spiritual cleansing) and aromatic Niem leaves.

Spanish Warmth in the Urban Canopy: LUZ Bangkok Tapas Bar

LUZ Bangkok Tapas Bar

In the heart of the capital, LUZ Bangkok Tapas Bar brings the convivial, high-energy spirit of Madrid to the 33rd and 34th floors of INNSiDE by Meliá Bangkok Sukhumvit. The architectural design is a marvel in itself: guests dining on the 33rd floor can gaze upward straight into the transparent glass bottom of the infinity pool above, while the 34th-floor terrace features outdoor lounges, sunbeds, and a contemporary interpretation of Bangkok’s historic Brahman structure, The Giant Swing.

  • Two-for-One Sunsets (Social Hours)

LUZ invites urbanites to slow down and connect with its daily ‘Social Hours’ promotion from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Guests can enjoy a brilliant two-for-one sunset drinks offer on selected wines, crisp Chang draught beer, and signature cocktails. Options include the inventive Tinto Sour (made with bourbon whiskey, red wine, lemon, and sea buckthorn-rooibos honey) or the indulgent Cremoso (combining white rum, cava sparkling wine, tiramisu syrup, mascarpone, and soy milk).

  • The Culinary Concept

As the sun sinks, the space transforms into a vibrant culinary hub featuring a new menu by Madrid-born Spanish Chef de Cuisine Juan Ignacio García Racionero. The dishes beautifully reference regional Spanish styles, inviting guests to share authentic Basque pintxos, classic Madrid-inspired tapas, fresh Andalusian seafood, and rich coastal rice dishes from eastern Spain.

Heritage, Soul, and Shared Feasts: Yitong Chinese Restaurant & Sky Bar, Pattaya

Yitong Chinese Restaurant & Sky Bar, Pattaya

A short commute from the capital brings you to the 12th floor of Meliá Pattaya, where Yitong Chinese Restaurant & Sky Bar looks out over the vast Gulf of Thailand vistas. Meaning "together," Yitong pays a beautiful homage to the longstanding Chinese communities of Chonburi, their shrines, and historic markets, curating a family-style dining experience where dishes are served to encourage shared meals and deep connectedness.

Serving from 5:00 PM, their ‘A Feast of Flavour’ experience focuses heavily on nourishment with a prime focus on "goodness for the body, mind, and soul":

  • The Centerpiece: A traditional, wood-smoked Peking duck prepared Hong Kong style, served with all its classic accompaniments alongside sweeping coastal views.

  • Chinese-Infused Mixology: The cocktail list incorporates traditional Eastern ingredients and symbolic references. Sunset signatures include ‘Kuaile De’ (goji berry-infused gin, honey, lemon juice, and cava), the complex ‘Chun Hou’ (blending brandy, orange curaçao, rosella tea, and rose syrup), and the bold ‘Tian De’ (featuring Campari infused with ginseng alongside Chinese liquor and brown sugar syrup).

  • Mindful Mocktails: Non-alcoholic options are treated with equal reverence, featuring premium mocktails such as the ‘Virgin Chit-Cha Toddy’, a comforting blend of oolong tea, fresh lemon juice, ginger syrup, and a touch of warm cinnamon.
